Eastern Hellbender salamander (Cryptobranchus alleganiensis) viewed from above in its natural streambed habitat, surrounded by rocks, sandy substrate, and shallow clear water — illustrating the aquatic environment this endangered Ohio amphibian depends on for survival.

The Eastern Hellbender (Cryptobranchus alleganiensis) is one of the largest amphibian species in the world. Some individuals grow to over 27 inches. Formerly, this species occupied 25 counties across the state. Now, it is restricted to less than 10 counties in Ohio. Eastern Hellbenders are fully aquatic and require cool, fast-flowing, rocky streams and rivers. Furthermore, Eastern Hellbenders are protected as an endangered species by the Ohio Department of Natural Resources Division of Wildlife.

Habitat assessments and construction monitoring for Eastern Hellbenders can be performed throughout the year. Visual encounter surveys for Eastern Hellbenders should be conducted during the active season from May through October.

EDGE’s professional herpetologist, Mr. Aaron Crank, is authorized to conduct Eastern Hellbender surveys and habitat assessments within Ohio. He has extensive experience surveying this species throughout its range. If evaluating and managing potential disturbances to Eastern Hellbenders is critical to the success of your project, please reach out to Aaron for #further insight.
